Ci 5.0 Career Night: Giving Campers a Vision for the Future

A highlight of overnight camp each year is career night. On the Wednesday evening of overnight camp we bring in outside speakers from various industries or academia to help campers understand different career paths, available jobs, and the schooling needed in STEM. This helps campers find direction for the future and perhaps alerts them to fields they didn’t even know existed.

Over the years we’ve hosted rocket scientists, cyber security engineers, college deans, college math professors, the inventor of the MRI, and others. Each of these presenters has encouraged our campers to continue in STEM and has gladly answered any question they have (and they always have great questions!).

In addition to outside speakers, each of our counselors shares their major and their future career plans before answering questions from campers. Our counselors come from a wide variety of schools, STEM fields, and career paths so our campers get a taste of the wide variety of educational and career options available in STEM fields. I believe it is a big encouragement to the campers to continue studying STEM when they see others who have similar interests who are doing just that.

We also help the campers understand the difference, as a Christian, between going to a Christian college or a secular college. We want them to be able to make an informed decision and have some food for thought to discuss with their parents when they get home or begin discussing college options. Many of our counselors come from Christian colleges, such as Cedarville University or Bob Jones University, but many others come from various secular colleges across the country. We want campers to be aware of the pros and cons of each option so, together with their parents, they can make the best choice for them.

Ci 5.0’s Career Night was another success and we trust the campers were encouraged by what they learned and will go on to pursue STEM careers of their own and encourage the next generation to love the Lord and love studying what He has made.
